My Folklore final piece

My final piece based on my Folklore about Domestic Violence and what Hospitals can do to help. This isn't a development of my original final piece. That has been developed but not on this blog. I used photos of the hospital for the issue. I made three versions to be iterative. This book cover was made with inspiration from a book design in a book I got from the library last year. I played around with the type of the word 'EXPOSURE' due to being experimental. I also used the logo of my first name only to be a bit different to all the other existing book covers.

Development into second final piece/Vanessa's Folklore

To develop the original book jacket based on Vanessa's folklore I decided to work from Vanessa's design instead of starting from scratch. I made other designs, but I will show these ones on the blog. I worked around with the type and layout. This makes the book cover a lot stronger than it already was.

September Folklore Presentation

The Folklore project was given to me in August 2014 and the first part needs to be presented to the whole university in September. My final piece is below.

Next is my peers design.

Reading the book

On the original and developed video I first read the whole story. It is a good read and I recommend it to anyone to read it. I had to choose a 15 second of the story to use in the video. I chosen the quote 'I wrote him a little letter back thanking for his prompt and courteous reply.'

I like it due to it's kindness and it can apply to anything, not just this story.

Tutor feedback/Development of existing design

To gain more knowledge before I develop the existing KINETIC TYPE idea I reached out to my tutor Karl, shown him the design and asked of his opinion. He advised me of some alterations needed. I agreed with him and done that. With all the info of different styles of K.T I then drawn a storyboard of how the video needs to be. I don't have it to show due to handing it in to the tutors. It was also required to be the final piece along with the video.

Similarity of Vanessa's book jacket

I didn't realize it but the layout for Vanessa's book jacket looks a bit like the cover art of the musician Kanye West. Somebody mentioned it to me.

Vanessa's Folklore and my response

For the Folklore project I was required to be put in a group with another peer and based on his/her Folklore make something in response to the Folklore and finally a book jacket.

I was partnered with a girl called Vanessa. Her Folklore was a story about a girl who escapes Hospital and meets this guy and asks him a question. Regardless of whether he says yes or no she will attack him.

Below is my original final piece in response. I titled the story 'Psycho Girl' as she didn't have one.

I was inspired by the book 'Sugar Rush'.

It was amazing to work with Vanessa. She is a really kind girl. We also worked together on the Design By Nature project and that was a massive success. I have kept the same work ethic and aim for this to be just as successful.

Folklore research

For more in depth research into my Folklore project to make a book jacket I researched the National Domestic Violence Helpline. I researched my tutors Tim Metcalf and Karl Foster's website portfolios. I also researched artists recommended by my other tutor Sarah Temple. I then researched the work of Mister Rob. I did work experience with him and his team. I finally researched the art of Yayoi Kusama.

Scraps of visual stuff

Some samples of other peoples designs.

Class presentation of Folklore book cover project

As part of the folklore project the class and I had to present our early findings of the book cover project so far.

Artist research: Ashton Cayless

For artist research I researched a lot of designers. One of them is Ashton Cayless. He is the founder of Hipe Clothing and a former student of LCC. One of today's innovative young designers, he is also an old friend who lived on the same street as me. His design is use of collage and the computer. What makes him great is his fast forward approach to design making.

Visiting book shop

For research I visited a book shop in Canary Wharf in order to see what a contemporary book cover looks like so I design a book cover of a high level of quality.

First and original Innocent's Exposure book cover

This is the first book cover of the Folklore story about domestic violence. I used tracing paper based on the word exposure and seeing through things.

Explanation of Innocent's Exposure

Innocent's Exposure is a story about an abused woman who reflects on her life and where she went wrong. I was inspired by a wide range of things such as Sleeping with the enemy, Double Jeopardy, Enough, Vanilla Sky, Sin City, the TV show Damages, Footballers Wives and all of the UK soaps.

I written the story early into the project development as I didn't want to wait until the end to do it. So I don't get it all handed in late. And so I had to do everything I can to make sure that doesn't happen.

Outside of art I have also taken classes in writing, drama and music.

Folklore Final Piece (Innocent's Exposure Script)

Innocent’s Exposure Script

A story about a woman’s search for the truth.

Innocent is at work as a receptionist. It’s 3pm. She gets up from her desk and speaks to her manager Mark.

Innocent
Hey Mark. As I said earlier I have to leave early to pick up my son. The childminder is sick.

Mark
Okay Innocent. Don’t make this a habit.

Innocent
Thanks Mark. I’ll see you tomorrow.

Innocent puts her jacket on and walks out of the office. She walks in a rush to her son Elliot’s school and he walks out.

Innocent
Hey baby. How was your day?

Elliot
It was a fun day.

They both walk to the car and Innocent drives them home.

Next scene
Elliot is sitting on the dining table doing his homework and Innocent’s boyfriend Stan comes in to the house.

Stan
Hello.

Innocent
Hi Stan. How are you?

Stan
It was alright. Long day as usual.

Elliot gets off his chair and shows Stan a picture he has drawn.

Stan
It’s amazing Elliot.

Stan
Innocent did you get me my shoe polish?

Innocent
Oh no. I didn’t. Elliot’s childminder is sick and I had to leave work early to pick him up.

Stan looks deeply into Innocent’s eyes leaving a couple of seconds of silence.

Stan
Elliot. Can you go to your room?

Elliot
But I’m doing my homework.

Stan
Well you don’t have to. Do it later. Go to your room and play with your toys.

Elliot
Yay.

Elliot goes to his bedroom and plays with his toys.

Stan
How come you don’t get me what I ask of you? It’s just shoe polish. You could have at least got it on the way to the school.

Innocent
Stan. Don’t be mad.

Stan
I’m not mad. Just get me what I need when I ask for it.

Innocent
You know what Stan. Just do it. Hit me.

Stan hits Innocent to the ground.

Stan
Innocent I didn’t mean it. I just get so angry sometimes.

Stan attempts to touch Innocent and she hits him back. He hits her again and she hits him with a remote control. He throws her into the TV and she falls unconscious.

Next scene
Innocent wakes up to find the house empty. Innocent gets into her car. A rollercoaster of scenes show her looking all around town for Elliot. She goes to the forest as Stan loves that place and they go there as a family on a couple of occasions. She then sees Stan with Elliot.

Innocent
Stan. Stop it. Give me back my son.

Stan
Give him back. I’m practically his Father.

Innocent
You assaulted me and kidnapped my baby. Give him back.

Stan lets Elliot go and Innocent tells Elliot to go in the car and gives him the keys.

Innocent
Go in the car. Lock it and open it only for me.

Elliot runs to the car. Innocent talks to Stan.

Innocent
Why are you like this? Why are you so abusive to me? Always a charmer around everyone else but treat me like crap.

Stan
I love you. I just get angry sometimes. I’m not perfect.

Innocent
No. You’re not. You’re an abusive freak. I don’t know why I let you in and do this to me. I don’t care anymore. It’s over. I don’t love you and I don’t want you in my life.

Innocent walks away. Stan grabs her, punches her in the stomach and chokes her. She grabs a rock and hits him over the head. She gets up and he grabs her leg and she hits him again. She runs away to the car, kisses Elliot and drives off home.

Next scene
Innocent and Elliot speak.

Innocent
Baby it’s you and me from now on. No more Stan.

Elliot
But I thought he makes you happy.

Innocent
I finally realised I don’t need him to be happy.

Innocent puts Elliot to sleep. She then calls the Police. Half an hour later the Police arrive. They knock on the door and Innocent opens it.

Damien
Hello. I am D.C.I Damien Morgan.

Innocent
At last. You’ve arrived. I want to report domestic abuse.

Damien
That’s not why we are here. Innocent Khan I am arresting you for the attempted murder of Stan Thornton. You do not have to say anything. Anything you do say may be used against you in a court of law.

Damien places the handcuffs on Innocent and drags her away.

Innocent
You can’t do this. I’ve done nothing wrong.

The Police officers take Elliot.

Innocent
Let me at least call my family to take care of Elliot.

Damien
Who can we call?

Innocent
Elliot’s Aunt Natalie.

Next scene
Damien questions Innocent.

Damien
Before you’re report. Stan made a report that he had been hit over the head by you in a rage. At the crime scene was loads of blood.

Innocent
What! Is he in hospital?

Damien
He hasn’t been found. Did you murder him?

Innocent
No. I wouldn’t. He attacked me and I hit him in self-defence. He’s been abusing me for months. He is crazy. I couldn’t take anymore. I wanted it to stop but not murder.

Damien
I don’t believe you. Where is his body?

Innocent
I don’t know. I hit him and ran off with my son home.

Damien
Did your son witness this violence?

Innocent
No. You can dig up the whole forest, check the water and he is not there. I swear.

Damien
Due to the evidence I am charging you with the murder of Stan Thornton.

Innocent
No. You can’t. I didn’t do it. Please think of my baby. Can I speak with him?

Damien
No. He is a witness.

Innocent
A witness. He’s four.

Next scene
As Damien and the Police drag Innocent she sees her son with Natalie. Elliot goes into another room and Natalie walks up to Innocent.

Innocent
Nat. I’m innocent. I didn’t kill Stan.

Natalie
I know. I know. Look I’ll look after Elliot for now. You will get out.

Innocent
Take care of my baby.

Natalie
Of course I will. Just focus on yourself and get yourself out this mess.

Damien
Time’s up.

Innocent
Thank you Natalie.

The Police take Innocent away.

Next scene
A court case has happened. With all the evidence presented Innocent is sentenced to seven years in prison. Innocent cries and speaks.

Innocent
No. Please. I didn’t do it. I didn’t kill that man.

The security take her away.

Next scene
Innocent is in her cell writing a letter with a visiting order to see Natalie and Elliot as she has missed Elliot’s fifth birthday. Innocent is called for lunch, she walks to the dining area and a prisoner deliberately bumps into her, shoving her food at her.

Harmony
Hey watch where you are going.

Innocent
It was your fault and you know it.

Harmony
What.

Innocent
Nothing. It was an accident.

Innocent walks away.

Next scene
Harmony and her gang enter Innocent’s room. Another female inmate speaks to the guard distracting him.

Harmony
Hey Innocent.

Harmony punches Innocent and kicks her while the gang watches. She then grabs a picture of Elliot and rips it up.

Innocent
No. That’s my only picture of my baby.

Harmony
Too bad.

Innocent punches Harmony. The gang all beat up Innocent.

Harmony
Innocent. This is my prison and you better respect me.

Innocent
No.

Harmony punches Innocent and stabs her. They all leave her for dead. The prison guard finds Innocent and she is taken to hospital.

Next scene
In Hospital Innocent wakes up to find her sister Cassie there, her husband Rickie and her boss Mark.

Cassie
How are you?

Innocent
Like death.

Cassie
But you’re not thank god. I’m so sorry. I could of stopped Stan.

Innocent
It’s not your fault.

Cassie cries.

Innocent
I know Stan is alive. Out there somewhere.

Cassie
Why would he frame you? What have you done? We will find him.

Mark
Just rest for now.

Cassie
Stay strong.

Rickie
We don’t want what happened to Oliver happen to you.

Innocent
I will.

Police
Time’s up.

As Innocent is lying in her bed thinking about her whole life. Her abusive childhood, her teenage years and adulthood.

Flashback
It is Innocent and Oliver’s wedding.

Priest
Do you Innocent Khan take Oliver Issiah to be your husband?

Innocent
I do.

They kiss.

Next flashback
Innocent witnesses her Father hit her Mother. He turns on Innocent.

Walter
Innocent you are nothing and will never amount to anything.

Next flashback
Innocent is in the Hospital with Doctors and Oliver giving birth to Elliot.

Oliver
It’s a boy. We have a baby boy.

Innocent
Can we call him Elliot. My Step Dad’s name.

Oliver
Perfect. Baby Elliot Issiah.

Innocent cries and holds him for the first time.

Innocent
This is what it’s all about. Me, you and Elliot forever.

Innocent and Oliver kiss.

Next flashback
Innocent is in a conversation with Oliver.

Oliver
I know you shouldn’t have gone back to work. This guy is crazy. He is obsessed with you.

Innocent
I’m not quitting that job because of him or you. I’m going to work today. Pick me up for lunch.

Next flashback
Innocent is at the photocopier and Jeff walks up to her.

Jeff
I’m sorry about last week. I know you’ve got a husband and I respect that now.

Innocent
Jeff. That’s good. We know where we stand.

Jeff
Maybe we can be friends.

Oliver walks in the office.

Innocent
I don’t think that’s possible.

Jeff grabs Innocent’s arm.

Oliver
Hey what the hell are you doing to my Wife?

Jeff
We’re just chatting.

Oliver
Yeah right.

Oliver in a rage hits Jeff and he falls through the glass door.

Next flashback
Oliver is sentenced to three years in prison.

Next flashback
The Police inform Innocent of Oliver’s death.

Next flashback
At the funeral Gloria gives a speech, breaks down in tears and then shouts at Innocent.

Gloria
My son was fine before he met you. You ruined him. You killed him. He was off the drugs for years and you brought him to his death. He didn’t commit suicide with drugs. You killed him. You took him there. Down that road.

Innocent
I can’t take this. I’m going.

Gloria
It should have been you in that coffin.

Gloria slaps Innocent. Innocent runs out of the church crying. Natalie speaks to her Mum.

Natalie
It wasn’t her fault.

Natalie walks outside. Natalie and Innocent speak.

Natalie
You didn’t kill Oliver. His drug habit got the best of him. We need to be strong for baby Elliot and keep the legacy of Oliver alive.

Innocent
I will.

Next flashback
At the wake Oliver’s favourite song plays. Innocent then thinks about Stan and where she recognises him from (other than the relationship) and he was Natalie’s boyfriend way back when they were enemies. She saw him at a party with Natalie.

Next scene
Innocent speaks to herself.

Innocent
Oh my god.

Next scene
Innocent escapes from prison in disguise as a nurse and goes on the run. She goes to Natalie’s house. Natalie walks inside her house and sees Innocent sitting down on the dining chair.

Innocent
Hello Natalie. Or should I say Stan’s bitch of an other half.

Natalie
Oh so you figured it all out then.

Innocent
How could you? You knew the truth. I had nothing to do with his death.

Natalie
You might as well have killed him and you dared to move on.

Innocent
There really is nothing such as hate as first sight and then grow to like you.

Natalie
No. But too bad you aren’t going to survive. At least with Stan beating you we let you live.

Innocent
Where is he? Your Romeo.

Natalie
We go way back and I paid him.

Natalie slaps Innocent and runs off. Innocent chases after her and Natalie pulls out a gun.

Natalie
Freeze. Don’t you dare move.

Innocent
I’ve been through hell. I don’t care.

Innocent hits Natalie and takes the gun. Then Stan comes out of nowhere and hits her. Innocent hits him with a chair. Innocent beats Stan and hits Natalie with the gun.

Police arrive at Natalie’s house.

Natalie
It’s over. They are taking you to prison where I pray to god you die there.

Innocent
No. I’m not.

Innocent plays a tape recorder of Natalie confessing. The Police enter and Innocent gives Damien the tape. They arrest Natalie and Stan.

Next scene

Damien
I am so sorry. I got it wrong and the whole of the Metropolitan Police apologise.

Innocent
I want to pick up my son from school.

Damien
I can give you a lift.

Next scene
Elliot walks out of school and he sees his Mummy.

Elliot
Mummy.

Elliot runs to his Mum and gives her a big hug. Innocent cries.

Innocent
I’m not going anywhere baby. I’ve missed you. Mummy loves you.

Elliot
I love you too Mummy.

Kinetic Type research

For research in the Kinetic Type project I did the standard form of research by reading books. I also viewed other type videos on the internet.

Other method of research (FOLKLORE)

In addition to the research already conducted I searched Domestic Violence on Amazon. In my class a peer researched his issue on Amazon.

Artist research: SAGMEISTER

As part of research I looked into the art and work of Sagmeister. I was introduced to his work by tutors whilst I studied the foundation course. His unique approach makes him one of the most innovative designers of our generation. He questions what Graphic Design can be.

Generating design ideas (FOLKLORE)

After a bit of research for the Folklore project I thought it would be best that I come up with a few ideas. I was taught to do this in college. Doing loads of thumbnails of ideas of whatever and selecting the best. Merrier the more and you can get the best of ideas.

I usually gather a range of research first and make strong, informed ideas. Ideas that are developed from the original designs and some that are fresh and new.

I have generated 58 design ideas. Some thumbnail and others full design ideas. These ideas are stronger, more conceptual with more thought behind it.

Gallery of artwork from former LCC students

Last year June after assessment of artwork I was advised by my tutors to see the work of last years year three students. It was all presented in the art gallery space. I really liked the designs. It was very broad and everything was different. Nothing was similar in a good way.

Visiting the Art at The Photographers Gallery

For research on another project I had to attend the work of artists at The Photographers Gallery. It was worthwhile and I recommend everyone to go see it. It was great work and arranged right. This is related to this SMF project because images tell stories. They can be a hundred times more powerful than a graphic design. I have even signed up to do a solely photography course part time.
